Open-access research infrastructures: the contribution of the NanoItaly Association – APS

The NanoItaly Association – APS takes part in LAB Italia 2026 as a Conference Supporter and as the promoter of a round table dedicated to research infrastructures. You will find us at Stand no. 416 and in Room A, within the fair’s Scientific Programme.

What LAB Italia is

LAB Italia is the leading Italian trade fair for laboratory technologies, analysis, biotechnology and laboratory sciences. It is the meeting point for professionals, companies and researchers working on analytical solutions, advanced services and scientific innovation, bringing the entire Italian laboratory industry together under one roof.

The event combines an exhibition area, where companies present their technical developments and innovations, with a complete technical-scientific programme designed to help laboratories become future-proof. Admission is free, subject to registration.

NanoItaly’s presence

NanoItaly – APS is an Italian non-profit association that promotes bio-nanotechnologies across the scientific, industrial and institutional landscape, both in Italy and Europe. Its mission centres on advanced materials, nanocharacterisation, energy and nanomedicine. It is co-organiser of NanoInnovation, the leading Italian event on nanotechnology, and promoter of the Italian Nanomedicine Platform (INP), in connection with the European ETPN network.

At LAB Italia 2026 the Association is present with an exhibition stand (no. 416) and, above all, as the promoter and coordinator of a round table on open-access research infrastructures — the session from which the scientific programme described here originates.

Research Infrastructures: open-access technologies, expertise and services for research and industry

“Research infrastructures are not an end in themselves, but a tool: their value is measured by their ability to turn scientific resources into real-world solutions.”

The context

Over the past decade Europe has built a structured system of research infrastructures (RIs) as a driver of scientific excellence and industrial competitiveness. The ESFRI Strategy Forum has identified those of pan-European relevance, while the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) has laid the foundations for an open, interoperable digital ecosystem. In Italy, the NRRP (Mission 4, Component 2) has allocated over EUR 1.58 billion to create and strengthen them, in line with the ESFRI roadmap and the National Plan for Research Infrastructures (PNIR). The challenge is not only to build RIs, but to make them genuinely usable by researchers, SMEs and large enterprises, through simplified processes and guarantees of quality and traceability.

Who sits at the table

The round table brings together the promoter and four partners representing the full chain of access to research infrastructures:

• NanoItaly Association – APS — promoter and coordinator of the session
• iENTRANCE — Infrastructure for ENergy TRAnsition aNd Circular Economy: a distributed infrastructure funded with over EUR 75M under the NRRP, with a single-entry-point model and FAIR-based access
• IR2-tech / Rome Technopole — the Lazio innovation ecosystem (EUR 110M NRRP + ERDF resources), a Hub & Spoke model geared towards technology transfer and collaboration with SMEs
• ESRF – European Synchrotron (Grenoble) — the most powerful synchrotron light source in Europe, an ESFRI Landmark, offering competitive open access to more than 9,000 researchers a year
• University of Milano-Bicocca — the Third Mission perspective and the academia–industry interface
• Sapienza University of Rome — scientific host of the coordination

• Shared access — instrumentation and expertise: operating models, pricing and real-world cases
• Data quality — traceability and standardisation across laboratories: metrology and accreditation
• SMEs & barriers — real opportunities, administrative obstacles and practical onboarding solutions
• Interoperability & AI — FAIR data, intelligent platforms, open workflows and the role of artificial intelligence
• Post-NRRP sustainability — from public funding to self-sustaining service models

The format

The session, chaired by Marco Rossi (NanoItaly APS · Sapienza University of Rome), is structured in two parts: an opening framing and contextualisation, with short interventions from the panellists, followed by a round table moderated by journalist Marco Milano, with audience Q&A and a closing summary with a call to action.

Panellists: Luca Beverina (Milano-Bicocca), Alfredo Picano (iENTRANCE), Fabrizio Pirri (Politecnico di Torino / IIT), Ennio Tito Capria (ESRF), Luciano Galantini (Sapienza), Rossella Canese (Italian National Institute of Health, ISS).
